What Do I Need Before I Start Driving Lessons?
If you're about to start driving lessons, you probably have lots of questions.
What do I need to bring?
Do I need to pass my theory test first?
What should I wear?
The good news is that preparing for your first lesson is much easier than most people think.
Here's everything you need to know before you get behind the wheel.
Do I need a provisional driving licence?
Yes.
A valid UK provisional driving licence is the one thing you must have before you can legally drive on the road.
You'll need to bring it with you to your first lesson so I can check it before we set off.
Without it, we can't go out on the road.
If you haven't applied for one yet, that's the first thing you need to do.
Do I need to pass my theory test first?
No.
You can start driving lessons before you've passed your theory test.
In fact, most people do.
That said, I'd strongly recommend at least starting your theory revision before your first lesson.
With practical driving test waiting times still being long in many areas, it makes sense to get your theory test passed as early as you can.
The practical side of learning often helps the theory make much more sense.
Road signs, junctions, road markings and hazard awareness are much easier to understand when you're seeing them for real instead of just reading about them.
The two work really well together.
What should I wear?
Wear whatever you're comfortable in.
The only thing I'd avoid is footwear with very thick soles or high heels.
A comfortable pair of flat shoes makes it much easier to feel what the pedals are doing.
You'll spend far more time concentrating on the road than worrying about what you're wearing.
What should I bring?
Apart from your provisional licence...
Not a lot.
If you wear glasses or contact lenses for driving, don't forget them.
If you'd like a bottle of water, bring one.
Everything else you'll need will already be in the car.
Do I need any driving experience?
Not at all.
Some learners arrive having driven on private land.
Others have never even sat in the driver's seat before.
Both are absolutely fine.
Your first lesson is designed for complete beginners.
Nobody expects you to arrive already knowing how to drive.
That's why you've booked lessons.
What if I'm nervous?
If you're nervous, tell me.
I'd actually be surprised if you weren't. All you have to do is relax and be yourself.
Some learners arrive really excited.
Others are convinced they're going to get everything wrong before we've even started.
That's perfectly normal.
We'll work at your pace.
There's no pressure to do anything before you're ready.
You don't need to impress me.
You don't need to know anything before you arrive.
You're here to learn.
That's what your first lesson is for.
Can my parents come with me?
Yes, if you'd like them to.
Although, if I'm honest, I usually find learners relax much more once it's just the two of us in the car.
Having said that, there can be benefits to a parent sitting in on a lesson.
It gives them the opportunity to see how I'm teaching you, which can be really helpful if they're supervising your private practice between lessons.
If it's something you'd like to do, just let me know before your lesson.
Do I need learner driver insurance?
Not for lessons with me.
My tuition car is fully insured for learner drivers.
If you're planning to practise in your own car or a family member's car between lessons, that's different.
You'll need learner driver insurance before you drive on the road.
Do I need to know the Highway Code?
No.
You don't need to memorise it before your first lesson.
We'll cover everything as your lessons progress.
As you gain more experience behind the wheel, you'll probably find the Highway Code starts to make much more sense because you're seeing it in real situations rather than simply reading about them.
A final thought
You can apply for a provisional licence.
You can buy a pair of comfortable shoes.
You can even read the Highway Code from cover to cover.
But there's one thing you can't buy.
Experience.
That comes one lesson at a time.
One journey at a time.
One new skill at a time.
Don't put too much pressure on yourself.
Nobody is perfect on their first lesson.
The important thing is that you've made a start.
Every lesson builds on the last one.
Every mile you drive teaches you something.
Before long, the things that feel difficult today will simply become part of the way you drive.
