Can My Parents Teach Me to Drive?
Absolutely.
If your parents are happy to help, I'd encourage you to make the most of it.
Some of the biggest improvements I see in learners come from those who combine professional lessons with regular private practice.
The two work incredibly well together.
You can't buy experience.
You have to build it.
Every mile you drive teaches you something.
Different roads.
Different weather.
Different traffic.
Different situations.
Every journey builds confidence and experience.
The more experience you gain, the more relaxed driving starts to feel.
One question I'm often asked is when someone should start practising with their parents.
My advice is usually after you've had a few lessons.
That gives us time to build some solid foundations first.
Once you understand the basics, private practice becomes much more valuable because you're reinforcing good habits instead of accidentally creating new ones. The DVSA also recommends talking to your driving instructor about when you're ready to begin private practice and planning practice sessions around the skills you've already covered.
Private practice isn't about driving around aimlessly.
It's about practising what you've already learnt.
If we've been working on roundabouts, practise roundabouts.
If we've been working on meeting traffic, practise meeting traffic.
If we've been working on manoeuvres, practise those.
The more familiar those skills become, the easier it is to move on to the next stage.
Sometimes parents worry about teaching something differently to the instructor.
Don't worry.
Every experienced driver develops their own habits over the years.
If your parents suggest something that's different to what we've been doing, just ask me.
We'll talk it through.
There's usually a good reason, and if there's a safer or more effective way of doing something, we'll work it out together.
Parents give you something that's incredibly valuable.
Time behind the wheel.
My job is different.
I create a safe environment where you can learn.
I'll ask questions.
I'll encourage you to think about what happened.
I'll help you work out what you could do differently next time.
I'll keep you safe while you experiment, discover what works and build your own understanding.
People remember far more when they've worked something out for themselves than when they've simply been told the answer.
There is one important thing your parents can't help you with.
Motorway driving.
Learner drivers can only drive on a motorway when they're accompanied by an approved driving instructor in a dual-controlled car. You cannot practise on a motorway with family or friends, even if they meet the legal requirements to supervise you.
When you're ready, that's something we'll do together.
So, can your parents teach you to drive?
Absolutely.
Should they replace professional lessons?
No.
Together they make a brilliant team.
Your parents help you gain experience.
I help you understand what that experience is teaching you.
That's a combination that's hard to beat.
