If you're thinking about learning to drive, this is one of the first questions you'll probably ask.
Do I need to pass my theory test before I start driving lessons?
The simple answer is...
No.
You can start driving lessons before you've passed your theory test.
In fact, that's exactly what most learners do.
But if you asked for my advice, I'd tell you to get your theory test passed as soon as possible.
Here's why.
Don't leave it until the last minute
One thing I'd recommend to every learner is don't put your theory revision off.
It's very easy to think you'll do it later.
Then before you know it, you're making great progress with your driving and starting to think about your practical test, but you've still got your theory test to pass.
Getting your theory test done early means it's one less thing to worry about.
You can then concentrate on becoming the best driver you can be.
Start your theory revision before your first lesson
You don't need to wait until you've had a few lessons before opening a theory app.
Start before your first lesson if you can.
Even ten or fifteen minutes a day soon adds up.
You'll be surprised how often something you've revised comes up on your next driving lesson.
You'll also cover things on your lessons that suddenly make more sense when you're revising later that evening.
The two work really well together.
Your theory test isn't just something you have to pass
I think this is where some learners get it wrong.
They see the theory test as something they need to pass before they can book a practical test.
I don't.
The theory test is there to help you become a safer driver.
Understanding road signs.
Road markings.
Stopping distances.
Hazard perception.
The Highway Code.
Knowing who has priority.
Understanding why you're doing something, not just what you're doing.
You'll use that knowledge every time you drive, long after you've passed your test.
You don't need hours every day
People often think they need to spend hours revising.
You don't.
Twenty minutes a day is far better than trying to cram everything into one weekend.
It's exactly the same as learning to drive.
Little and often usually works best.
The resources I recommend
Learners often ask me which theory app they should use.
There are plenty of good ones available, but these are the ones I usually recommend.
My personal favourite is Driving Theory by James May.
I also recommend Theory Test Pro and Driving Theory Test 4 in 1 Kit.
Whichever app you choose, I'd also recommend spending some time reading the Highway Code.
The Highway Code isn't there just to help you pass your theory test.
It's there to help you understand how to stay safe on the road.

A final thought
People often think learning to drive is all about making the car move.
It isn't.
Anyone can learn to steer, brake and accelerate.
Being a safe driver is about understanding what's happening around you.
That's exactly what your theory test is helping you do.
So don't think of it as something you just need to pass.
Think of it as part of learning to drive.
Start your revision early.
Keep it going alongside your lessons.
Get your theory test passed as soon as possible.
I think you'll find everything else starts to fall into place much more easily.
