When Am I Ready for My Driving Test?

One of the biggest questions learners ask is...
"How do I know when I'm ready?"
The honest answer is...
You'll probably never feel 100% ready.
Most learners don't.
But feeling ready and being ready aren't always the same thing.
Over time, you'll reach a point where driving starts to feel more natural.
You're no longer thinking about every little thing.
You're making decisions for yourself.
You're dealing with what's happening around you instead of waiting for your instructor to tell you what to do.
That's when you know you're getting close.
You shouldn't need prompts
One of the biggest signs that you're ready is that you no longer need me to tell you what to do.
I'm not talking about directions.
I mean prompts.
If I'm still reminding you to check your mirrors, reduce your speed or think about what's happening ahead, then you're probably not quite ready yet.
When you're test ready, you're making those decisions for yourself.
That's exactly what you'll need to do once you've passed and you're driving on your own. The DVSA's "Ready to Pass?" campaign uses this as one of its five key indicators that a learner is ready for their test.
I don't expect perfection. I expect consistency.
Everyone makes mistakes.
Even experienced drivers.
What I'm looking for is whether you're driving well consistently, not just having the occasional good lesson.
Good drives shouldn't be the exception.
They should be the norm.
Can you anticipate what's going to happen?
Driving isn't predictable.
Someone might pull out in front of you.
A pedestrian could step into the road.
A cyclist might move out to avoid a parked car.
Being ready isn't about knowing exactly what's going to happen.
It's about anticipating what might happen and being ready to deal with it safely and calmly if it does.
That's real driving.
Can you drive independently?
Your driving test isn't about showing me you can follow instructions.
It's about showing the examiner that you can drive safely on your own.
That means planning ahead.
Reading the road.
Making good decisions.
Adapting to changing situations.
If you're relying on someone else to help you through those situations, you're probably not ready just yet.
Do I need to pass a mock driving test?
I do use mock driving tests, and they can be useful.
But I don't rely on them to tell me whether someone is ready.
The reality is they're still not a real driving test.
You've spent hours learning with me, so it's almost impossible to recreate the nerves and pressure that come with sitting next to an examiner you've never met before.
One of the biggest signs I look for is much simpler.
If I'm sitting beside you for long periods without needing to say anything, you're usually driving at the standard I want to see.
You're making your own decisions.
You're spotting hazards early.
You're planning ahead.
You're driving independently.
For me, that's a much better indication that you're getting close to being test ready.
What if my instructor says I'm not ready?
I know that can be disappointing.
Especially when you've already got a test booked.
But remember...
Your instructor isn't trying to stop you passing.
They're trying to give you the best possible chance of passing.
I'd much rather tell someone they need a few more lessons than see them take a test before they're ready.
Not only does that improve your chances of passing, it also means you're far more likely to be ready for driving on your own afterwards.
The DVSA's "Ready to Pass?" campaign also says one of the strongest signs you're ready is when your driving instructor agrees you're ready.

A final thought
Passing your driving test is a fantastic achievement.
But it's only the beginning.
My job isn't just to help you pass a driving test.
It's to help you become someone who can drive safely, confidently and independently long after the examiner has left the car.
If you're driving consistently, making your own decisions, anticipating what's happening around you and no longer needing prompts from me, then there's a good chance you're ready.
And if I tell you you're ready...
You can be confident that I genuinely believe you are.
